OUT@HOME | Where do we go when we go out? It is one of the questions the 5 Days Off festival poses. Amsterdam’s dance and club culture festival showcases today’s hip, mass metropolitan nightlife. This year (7 to 11 March), the festival hosts a thematic programme about where we go when we go out and invited photographer Robin de Puy of Amsterdam to give her take on our modern night-time habitat.
This series of photos was the result, spotlighting a different side of today’s nocturnal lifestyle. As it turns out, we like to stay in, to keep things simple and to mix with our own familiar circle. De Puy photographed private parties: people entertaining at home, guitar-playing junkies, fashionable young people and the older generation playing bridge. No crowds, no mad crush, instead she focused on the individual within the group.
The final series will be exhibited in the Amsterdam Museum (10Feb - 01Apr).

Last week CODE magazine asked me if I would like to go to the Sunrise Offgrid Festival in England coming weekend. Of course I would like to go there! I've packed my stuff, jumped into the plane with stylist Clyde Semmoh and took a cab to Fernhill Farm near Bristol.
"It's a place for community activists, transition-towners, green families, holistic practitioners, permaculturalists and anyone who wants to live a little more in tune with the planet. It's a place to gather ourselves and network with each other; to share our knowledge, skills and wisdom".
I have never ever been on a place like this before, a place where the people are this 'sweet'. One of them reminded me of a quote of Jimi Hendrix “When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.”
In short: I had a great weekend and I think a made a great series of great people. The series will be published in the coming issue (the October issue).

I am very glad to tell you that Stadsarchief Amsterdam picked my project out of 147 submissions. Stadsarchief Amsterdam will award a grant for this project and after photographing this great project 20 images will be stored in the municipal archives. Soon I will tell you more about this project!

“Hello my dear, what can I do for you?”, asks Dr. Ayman Hajjar, one of the few cosmetic surgeons who’s is happy to meet Robin de Puy (1986, Amsterdam). Two days of visiting clinic after clinic in the burning sun of Dubai, Robin feels very happy to encounter a smile in the pleasantly chilled clinic. Dr. Hajjar asks her to sit down and once again she begins to tell her story.
There’s no shortage of Cosmetic surgeons. A somewhat hanging eyelid, thin lips or a nose that’s considered too big is easily fixed at one of the many clinics at the Jumeirah Road and the Al Wasl Road. Just walk in and leave the building reshaped. Expat wifes as well as Arabic women undergo surgery more and more often. Shopping malls are filled with tiny noses and pump full pink lips. Despite the fact that cosmetic surgery is part of the Dubai life, women are not at all willing to admit they had something done. Luckily Robin found an Arabic woman in the shopping mall who was willing to pose for her. In a clinic she encountered a woman who whishes she to get her old face back more than anything in the world. Now, she only dares to walk the streets with big black sunglasses to cover the failed surgeries. Robin couldn’t find find more women for her project and so she turned to Dr. Ayman, who responded:
“Well, I will help you. I will give you upper eye led surgery, a lip filler, nose surgery, under eye filler and a boob job. Would that help for you?”

I was looking through all my pictures and suddenly I realised that I do photograph a lot of flowers and/or plants... I love plants, I love flowers and I love collecting stuff... So putting this all together I figured out that collecting pictures of flowers would be a good project. This is my collection so far.

Coming weekend in Volkskrant Magazine: a series of a brothel in Amsterdam. The last couple of years 75% of the brothels were forced to close their doors, but we found a stickler: Ria's Mens Club.
In PS vd Week (hetPAROOL) you will see 2 small series: one of a woman called Jean (or Sjaan) who is working in the supermarket Albert Heijn for already 30 years. A lot of people go to this supermarket, because of the good service of Jean.
Besides the series of Jean you will also see some photo's of Mirjam Blecourt, a lawyer of Baker & McKenzie. So... actually... the only thing that I really want to say is: check Volkskrant Magazine and PS vd Week (hetPAROOL) coming weekend!

Today I had a shoot in House Sonneveld. This house was built in the 1930s, it is one of the best-preserved houses in the Nieuwe Bouwen style, the Dutch branch of the International School of Modernism. It was designed by the architecture firm of Brinkman & Van der Vlugt, also known for the Van Nelle Factory and Feyenoord Stadium. Great location to shoot a series!

For "Borstkanker Vereniging Nederland" (Breast cancer association of the Netherlands) I had to photograph a cover for their new magazine. I met a brave woman who posed dressed for the cover, but undressed for an image inside the magazine. The backside of the magazine could be filled with any picture this woman wanted, so it could be her loving dog, her passion for flowers or (in this case) a picture with 6 other women who had tattoo at the same time to remember their lost mom/friend. We went to a little tattoo studio in Purmerend where we met one of the two nice tattoo guys!

Four years ago I heard about an albino man living in Herkingen (a little village in the South-West of The Netherlands). I was curious so I started to search for this man. People told me that he would not even open his door, because 'this man is weird!'... So I went to his place, looked through the window, saw an old man sitting in front of the window and decided to go inside. The old man was his father. I heard stories about his wife, the war, his youth, his grandchildren and more...
After a while 'my' albino man was walking in. A big, white man. He was a little confused and scared of this strange young woman sitting in his chair. After a few meetings I decided to take him to Rotterdam. This man, called Kees Kievit, have not left the village in 20 years, so you probably understand that this trip was a real experience. Not only for him, but also for me. After the shoot I brought him home. He stepped out of the car and threw a small paper into my car... He said: 'I wrote it for you' and he left. (Sorry for the ones who can not read Dutch!):

I am happy to say that I have been very busy lately! I photographed editorials for Glamcult, Volkskrant Magazine, Het Parool, Viva, VICE and more. Besides that some of my work, including an interview, will be published in coming BLEND magazine and in PS magazine (a new Dutch fashion magazine which will be launched in April). So in fact I'm pretty okay!!

Almost two years ago I made a series called 'girls in prostitution'. Nowadays I am photographing men working in the sex industry. And I do not mean male escorts, but men who are running brothel companies, financial advisors, (ex)pimps, etc. I already found the first three men, but I am still looking for three more!

De Koppeling (situated in Amsterdam Zuid-Oost) is a treatment centre for young people with behavioural, emotional and/or social difficulties. I am making a series of these young people.

Just came back from my trip to Hirtshals, Denmark. I photographed a fashion editorial for CODE magazine. I also met a special Dutch guy called Pieter Jan. Unfortunately he won't be in the series, but he is definitely worth seeing! (cap: Fred Perry)

OVERALL WINNER 'THE PHOTO ACADEMY AWARD 2009'
DEN HAAG (ANP) - Robin de Puy (23) heeft vrijdag The Photo Academy Award 2009 gewonnen. Dat heeft de Fotoacademie bekendgemaakt in het Fotomuseum in Den Haag, waar de uitreiking plaatsvond.
De Fotoacademie organiseert sinds 2003 The Photo Academy Award, een fotocompetitie voor laatstejaarsstudenten en fotografen die maximaal een jaar zijn afgestudeerd van alle Nederlandse en Vlaamse academies. De winnaar ontvangt een prijs van 5000 euro en exposities en opdrachten.
Robin (23) studeerde in mei af aan de Fotoacademie. De jury was onder de indruk van de keuze van haar onderwerp en haar aanpak, waarbij ze zichzelf wegcijfert en ,,onmerkbaar aanwezig is''. De serie die zij fotografeerde heet Meisjes in de prostitutie.
